a second conference on genetic joyce criticism organized by the Antwerp James Joyce Centre
University of Antwerp, 10-11 December 1998
Although genetic and textual approaches have
been central in recent discussions about the work of James Joyce and although
genetic criticism has even been described as the new paradigm in Joyce
studies, the many initiatives in the field have not managed to create the
necessary research infrastructure that justifies the label of "paradigm".
The reasons for this are varied: literary scholarship does not have a tradition
of cooperation, both the copyright situation and the different controversies
about Gabler's Ulysses and Rose's Finn's Hotel have muddied the waters,
and finally and perhaps most importantly, the different "schools" in genetic
criticism may have been far too busy sniping at each other to explore the
possibility of active cooperation.
Since 1989 the Antwerp Joyce Centre
has attempted to mediate between the different schools by initiating contacts
and exchanges. Since the last genetic conference in Antwerp (Genitricksling
in 1997), several ambitious collaborative projects have been set up. Sam
Slote and Luca Crispi have begun work on a genetic introduction to Finnegans
Wake, which will contain contributions from seventeen different critics
and which will introduce geneticism to a wider audience. Mikio Fuse has
started a collaborative web-publication, Bill Cadbury is working on the
Finnegans Wake drafts. Mike Groden's Hypermedia edition of Ulysses will
contain a strong genetic component, and more and even bigger initiatives
are in the final stages of preparation.
This sudden burst of energy on different
fronts necessitates some form of coordination. It is not only essential
that everybody working in the field should be kept informed of the evolution
of all these different projects, but also that we should develop some form
of cooperation. Ideally we should be able to set up a giant genetic network.
